July 2020

11th July

I've had a few issues with the Fury these last few weeks. It's still problematic to start and runs very rich once warmed up. It will backfire if I lift off the throttle or coast and sometimes does it when I change gear. It feels like an automatic choke issue to me.

26th July

I took the air filter off today to check the choke and give it all a good clean. I can see the choke slowly adjust as the engine warms up but I'm not sure what the adjustment should be. My thinking is that with the engine warm, the choke should be fully disengaged. A little experimentation showed that the engine started better with it cleaned up and adjusted. A quick test drive, showed it was indeed running much better, with no backfires or pops from the exhaust.

I took the Fury out again, later that afternoon and the back fires had returned. Something I did to the choke clearly fixed the issue but not long term.

I also noticed that my Pipercross CX600 air filter is starting to crumble apart, which is not good for something decribed as a 'lifetime filter' that can be washed and cleaned. I really wanted to have the new airbox done by now but, I'm going to have to get a new Pipercross filter in the meantime.

I notice they now do a slightly shorter one at 40mm high, which would be a better fit if it has the right internal clearance.

I checked the measurements of my existing air filter. It is 70mm tall on the outside and 430mm × 150mm. There is atleast 45mm clearance to the top of the trumpets on the inside.

It's going to be an expensive month as far as the Fury goes! I've ordered a new battery as it is on its way out. I'm going to try mounting this new one on top of the scuttle, to keep it cooler. The exisitng leads are long enough to allow this.

The new battery arrived from MDS Battery today and I was less than impressed. Apparently they are not allowed to ship it with the sealed battery acid pack any more, so they pre-filled the battery and stuck the "empty" plastic pack in the box, to leak acid all over the place :-(
